[Solved] IPhone passes Exchange 2010 setup but then gets ‘Cannot Get Mail. The connection to the server failed’

So your IPhone is not getting Exchange email after setting up your account and it verifying the account during the setup?

Here is what may be going on.

The ‘Cannot Get Mail.  The connection to the server failed’ error may be the cause of a simple mis-configuration in the Microsoft Active Directory services for that user. To see if it is this issue you will need to open the Active Directory Users and Computers, Select the VIEW menu from the top and click on “Advanced Features”. Now open the properties on the user having the issue and select the “Security” tab. Under this tab will be windows with user accounts listed and a “Advanced button” at the bottom. Select this button and find the check box “Include Inheritable permissions from this object’s parent” . If this is the problem you will find the box “unchecked”. Just check the box and try again. You should see mail start to flow.

  1. I ran into this same problem. Exchange was working for every iPhone/iPad in theorganization except the CEO, after a grueling upgrade from SBS 2003 to SBS 2011 (36 hour weekend caused by the migration wizard). What fixed it for me was:

Right click the account in exchange manager. Select the phone option from the list. Remove the phone or wipe all phones out per the available options. This worked and worked when I needed it the most. “its not a bug, its a feature”…thanks alot Microsoft! I knkow this is frustrating, so if you need something to make you feel better, google the “bill gates pie attack” and watch the utube video.

  2. This worked for me too. I was skeptical about doing it as I have Domain Admin rights and Remote permissions, but it seems that it did not do any harm. I checked for my colleagues and they also are missing the check-mark for “Include Inheritable permissions from this object’s parent”. I am surprised their iPhones still work OK. Mine also worked till we moved the databases around a while back. Thanks squidworks!

  3. Thanks…i sent this link to my IT department and after they checked the box my email is working on my iphone! This is after talking to several people…grrr

  4. Perfect, been battling this for a lil over a month. Makes sense, the problem was user specific and the connection was made but no permissions allowed for the viewing/transport of the mail.

  5. Well I am glad this is working for everyone… Feel free to click an Ad, so I can get a buck for my efforts.

  6. This also fixed the error for us, Remember that when you turn on the Advanced Features that it can take a few minutes for the tab to actually appear in ADUC.

  7. That was the problem with a new iPhone 4S. Thing is though my account didn’t have this check marked and it worked fine.

  8. Worked for one of the two of us in company who couldn’t get access. Unfortunately it did not work for me, but my systems admin is now happy. Any advise?

  9. I could kiss you!! 2 hours and finally finding your post and my one goofy user is pulling email now. Strange thing is I copied this persons ad account from a working acct. I wonder what happened?

  10. Had this error as a result of a really large message size (not attachment). Recipient recieved a message with 7 MB of log data pasted into the it as text. We noticed that we could sync other folders but not the inbox. We began by pulling messages out of the Inbox to a sub folder until the phone would sync. Then we restored them in small increments until it failed narrowing down by time/date where the issue occurred.

  11. I had this issue with a single user, only on the inbox, other folders worked fine, it was a single, small, corrupt message. Once removed everything worked.

  12. Thank you very much.
Solved our problem – and the user in this case was member of the group “Domain Admin”, but still we had to set the check mark as described.

  13. It work for me. But why there is this problem? is an Exchange 2013 bug?

this problem include all devices or only ios?

    thanks for now

  14. This worked for me also, was going through a lot of settings and it didn’t work for 1 or 2 users. I was getting insane. But this setting did it.

  15. I had soent hours on this. Some users worked some didnt and I had compared everything. Read this. Applied it and boom.

    Thank you very very much

  16. In my case this check mark is there but still the problem persists.. please help….

  17. My firm is in the process of moving mailboxes from Exchange 2010 to 2013. So far, all users with iPhones have moved fine except for 2. In both cases, the “Include Inheritable permissions from this object’s parent” IS checked. We are going to try Austin’s resolution from above. Anyone else have any ideas?
